History in Matalascanas, Almonte, Huelva, Spain, Andalusia
Your note
The beach of Matalascanas is in a unique and priveledged environment. It was a pirate and berebere focal point during the begining centuries of the second millenium. For this reason the Crown of Aragon decided to build guard towers along the entire coast to stop the atacks.
At the end of the 16th century they began building towers, they served as a refuge for those that protected and alerted the people in the town from the arrival of pirates.
These towers are still there, although their use is not strictly for tourist interest. Today it looks like an urbanization that has grown in between these towers. Almonte has grown up on the beach, and since the late 70's has become one of the main national tourist destinations.
There are various monuments that you can visit in Matalascanas and Almonte, such as the Museum of El Rocio, as well as the Sanctuary of Our Lady del Rocio, or a walk through the marshlands.
