Almonte is a municipality of Huelva with a population of about 20,000. It borders with the towns of Almonte, El Rocio, and Matalascanas. The two first ones mentioned are in the interior and the third is a coastal town that welcomes many tourists every year. The municipality of Almonte has an important richness, and that is the kilometer long beaches in Matalascanas. One of the highest pilgrimage villages in the world during the ROCIO festivities, and because of the Natural Park of Donana.
Historically speaking, since the Bronze ages, archeological remains have been found in this area dating back to the greek era and phoenician´s, even if the name Almonte comes from the arabs.
The Dukes of Medina Sidonia, Niebla, Sanlucar...are names that have strong ties with this locality that has survived due to it´s agriculture and livestock.
In the early 60´s the urban development boom came to Matalascanas. The increasing tourism levels demanded more accomodations and services to cater to their needs. It is an international and national vacation spot. This is due to it´s lovely beaches and the pilgrimages in honor of the Virgen del Rocio. |
